the title of "Ville d’Art et d’Histoire
(Artistic and Historic Town)", Le Havre
benefits from a unique ancient heritage: Museum
of Natural History, Museum of old Le Havre,
Graville Priory, Maison de l’Armateur
(Shipowner's House) … So many jewels
of the history of Le Havre which bear witness
to the importance of the port and town created
by Francis I in 1517. |

Severely
damaged by the Allied bombing of 1944, the
town center of Le Havre underwent a major
and structured rebuilding program designed
and implemented by the architect Auguste
Perret.
The
father of the characteristic architecture
of Le Havre envisaged the town center of
today: wide avenues, ergonomic and sunlit
housing, quick and easy urban traveling…
without forgetting the major works which
are Saint-Joseph church and its culminating
110-meter steeple and the Town Hall. |

its Docks Océane (5,000-seat multi-purpose
sports/entertainment hall), its Docks Café
(14,000 m² exhibition area), 26 concerts
cafés, 5 theaters and 31 movie theaters,
Le Havre is fitted with numerous places for
performances and activities which enhance
its cultural dynamism. |

Leading
French House of Culture, created through
the goodwill of André Malraux, Le
Volcan (“The Volcano”) is housed
in a characteristic and avant-garde building
constructed in 1982 by the Brazilian architect
Oscar Niemeyer.
A national Stage since 1992, it is nowadays
one of the five main French stages benefiting
from this label, and it offers a rich and
eclectic programming.
Besides
its two large auditoriums, Le Volcan has
an "Art & Essai, Recherche"
(experimental) movie theater (L’Eden)
which is popularly favored by Le Havre inhabitants
given the quality of its programming and
the numerous discussion forums which are
organized with great names of the cinema. |

Birthplace
of Impressionnist painters who found in
the region an exceptional light, Le Havre
is renowned for the work of Claude Monet,
« Impression, soleil levant »,
which gave its name to the movement. The
outstanding collection of Impressionist
works housed in the Malraux museum includes
major works of Monet, Pissarro, Sisley,
Jongkind, Renoir, Boudin, etc.
Le
Havre was also a major source of inspiration
for the Fauvists: the museum also shows
numerous significant works of Georges Braque,
Othon Friesz and Raoul Dufy.
Of
international renown, the Malraux museum
also houses temporary exhibitions of high
quality. |
