Culture in Le Havre is a profusion of concerts, shows, exhibitions and major events benefiting from a prestigious historical heritage and from high-quality modern infrastructures. Open to the sea, Le Havre is also naturally open to a life of culture!

Given the title of "Ville d’Art et d’Histoire (Artistic and Historic Town)", Le Havre benefits from a unique ancient heritage: Museum of Natural History, Museum of old Le Havre, Graville Priory, Maison de l’Armateur (Shipowner's House) … So many jewels of the history of Le Havre which bear witness to the importance of the port and town created by Francis I in 1517.

Severely damaged by the Allied bombing of 1944, the town center of Le Havre underwent a major and structured rebuilding program designed and implemented by the architect Auguste Perret.

The father of the characteristic architecture of Le Havre envisaged the town center of today: wide avenues, ergonomic and sunlit housing, quick and easy urban traveling… without forgetting the major works which are Saint-Joseph church and its culminating 110-meter steeple and the Town Hall.

With its Docks Océane (5,000-seat multi-purpose sports/entertainment hall), its Docks Café (14,000 m² exhibition area), 26 concerts cafés, 5 theaters and 31 movie theaters, Le Havre is fitted with numerous places for performances and activities which enhance its cultural dynamism.

Leading French House of Culture, created through the goodwill of André Malraux, Le Volcan (“The Volcano”) is housed in a characteristic and avant-garde building constructed in 1982 by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
A national Stage since 1992, it is nowadays one of the five main French stages benefiting from this label, and it offers a rich and eclectic programming.

Besides its two large auditoriums, Le Volcan has an "Art & Essai, Recherche" (experimental) movie theater (L’Eden) which is popularly favored by Le Havre inhabitants given the quality of its programming and the numerous discussion forums which are organized with great names of the cinema.

Birthplace of Impressionnist painters who found in the region an exceptional light, Le Havre is renowned for the work of Claude Monet, « Impression, soleil levant », which gave its name to the movement. The outstanding collection of Impressionist works housed in the Malraux museum includes major works of Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Jongkind, Renoir, Boudin, etc.

Le Havre was also a major source of inspiration for the Fauvists: the museum also shows numerous significant works of Georges Braque, Othon Friesz and Raoul Dufy.

Of international renown, the Malraux museum also houses temporary exhibitions of high quality.
